new allotment

Just started real work on our allotment, after a year!!. Aquired the allotment beginning of 2010 and other than chopping back the weeds, did very little work on it. This year we have more spare time so started working.
First task was to rotovate the whole thing - a task i thought would be easy . Not so, at forst the rotovator took off aroung the garden with me hanging on to it, and to make it worse it was barely scratching the surface. After a while got the technique right and after about 5 hours had the whole thing complete. Next task is to start a dig it over and get out the weeds.
next day set to and managed to plant three rows of potatoes and rows of lettuce, beetroot and rocket. Will keep you posted on the next steps and progress

Moving House

We have just moved house !!!! its quite correct what everyone says about it being stressful. I thought i had everything planned , down to the smallest detail. Its impossible, the smallest of details hide in the background until the last minute then jump out to bite you. We have downsized and had some modifications done to our new house. When i say some modifications - we aquired the hous in Feb 2010 and have just moved in (Dec 2010) , we totally gutted the house , modified walls, replaced every ceiling and then had all of the walls plastered and skimmed.
Overall the move of the furniture was ok with 2 hitches, the 3 seater settee had to be dismantled before it would go through the new door frames and the bed base would not go up the newly modified stairs. Not the end of the world in the grand scheme of things. Then sky man turned up - but he didnt have the equipement to install the dish on the chimney (its a grade II listed building and thats the only place it can be positioned) he is rescheduled for between Christmas and new year.
Because of the scheduled move , we invited to my daughters for xmas lunch. she as just called to say the water supply has gone off !!!! - ok , into the car to ferry all of the planned lunch over to our house - i am sure it will all be enjoyable.

Gardening - again!!

Now the proud owner of another allotement !(see my previous posts for the story on the last allotement) this one is full of weeds, but other than that - ready to go. It is well fenced in and has no 'rubbish' on the plot. The first task is to clear the weeds, then do a bit of levelling and finally create the raised beds.

Dont think that we will be able to plant anything this year but it will be ready for 2011.

Also going to get a shed and greenhouse and my better half is asking can we keep hens!, can we have a pond! and can we get some ducks ! - not too sure about this at the moment as it will mean a daily visit to feed etc and that will be time consuming. Never mind food for thought.

The intention is to make it organic - obviously this will take a few years - but thats the target. So will be doing quite a bit of research in the coming months to see what can and cannot be used.

This came about during a conversation with people of around my age. We live in a semi rural area and have access to many woods, streams cliff faces and good walking areas. When i was a youngster (a while ago i might add) as a group (probably referred to as a gang nowadays) we would wander off on a non school day to the local woods. We would leave the house early, armed with nothing more that a bottle of 'pop' or water and sometimes sandwiches. We would return when we we hungry or tired - normally late afternoon / early evening. Parents were never concerned, well apart from the various cuts and bruises we had acquired during the day - all limbs still intact ?, been in bother?, anyone else in the group hurt ? - answer yes/no & no and the next question would be 'would you like some T / Supper ?' and of course you did. Its not that our parents were not concerned about us and our well being - it is just that was the norm in our area. We played collectively as a group and this could include females as well !!! shock horror.

the village clown - part 2

And so it goes on - stories from a local pub. Todays conversations have covered the village clown last nite 'dropping his trousers', a wasp attack which led to are wasps good for anything?, why are some adults worse than children re table manners and the one that really shows our age 'in my days ........'
Our resident comedian had been celebrating - what you ask - nothing in particular - dont really need an excuse. The celebration meant that large quantities of ale had to be consumed and so by early evening he decided to go home. that sounds sensible i am sure you agree, however, living only a few hundred yards away can have its problems when it is difficult to walk or even talk !!! Because he is so likeable someone volunteered to take him home in the car. the lift was accepted graciously and off they went. Arrived at the drive, he got out , the would be chauffer turned the car around only to be met with the site of him dropping his trousers as a way of showing his appreciation. (not the full bare thing by the way - no one could stand that !!).
The wasp attack, which could have been serious, fortunately turned out to be a source of humour, Please note - no wasps, animals or humans were hurt in the telling of this story. Well actually a few wasps were hurt but that was to prevent the dog from being hurt. The story - walking the dog in the countryside near us the dog came upon a wasps nest. The dogs natural instinct (its a terrier) is to dive into the hole - not for long, out he ran pursued by several wasps. the number varies- the same chap is a fisherman and we all know what that means in terms of numbers and sizes - and of course he ran towards his master for protection - even a very fast terrier was finding it difficult to catch up with his master running as fast as possible in the opposite direction. Eventually he stopped and decided to help the dog. He attempted to get the wasps away from the dog with the aid of a newspaper by swiping at the wasps around the dog. The dog now thinks he is being chastised for something - the dilema - stay here and be beaten up by the master or leg it back to the wasps. The wasps were also very interested in the owner of the dog, deciding that down the wellington boot would be a nice place to start - after a few mins the attack was over and no one unduly hurt, the dog had a sting to the nose and the human - just hurt pride as he was spotted running away from the wasps waving a newspaper around his head.

the village clown - part 1 (of many i think)

It started when we first walked into the pub (our local). it is a pleasant country style pub frequented by many types, the visitors to the area, the business men and 'us' - 'us' being the locals. it is a semi rural area but we dont wear smocks or chew straw!!. The pub serves good quality food, reasonably priced and of course good beer.
anyway - back to the opening statement, as soon as we walked in i was asked if i knew anyone who wanted a job for a week - 'not sure' was my response then made the mistake of asking 'what is the work?'.
Well , he (pointing to one of the regulars) is going on holiday for a week so we need a substitute village idiot !!!!!.
Of course that brought a lot of laughs from the crowd , including the one being singled out as the VI.
Having said that he does act the clown, always has anecdotes re his work, his wife, his friends etc - he tells a good story and does play the fool - a lot.
But then you stand back and study him for a while - he lives in a very nice house set in its own grounds, works almost on the doorstep for a very prestigeous classic car company, drives a nice car, is never short of cash, is in the pub almost every evening - so who is the fool???
Me by comparison - start work very early, 10 miles from home, always under pressure to get tasks completed, project manage 4 - 5 projects at a time, often work evening & weekends, live in a normal 3 bed semi, drive a 'normal' car ....... mmmmm maybe there is something in this playing the fool - ok thats decided it - amending my CV to remove all references to my IT stuff - CV to be handed in for the VI post (hope i am not too late

Why do the call a dental surgery a practice - doesnt inspire you with confidence does it?
The reason for this post - My wife is petrified of the dentist, for no logical reason, and last week she had to visit them.
The reason - broken front tooth - the cause - me - no i didnt hit her - it was my generosity.
what had happenned was that it was a nice crisp Sunday afternoon and we decided to visit our local riverside park. Parked the car (a ridiculous 60p per hour - but thats another post) walked into the Park and there was an ice cream van. Being the kind hearted, and very generous husband that i am , i treated her to an ice cream cone. Last of the big spenders thats me!. However, continued with our walk enjoying the crisp fresh air and then suddenly she exclaimed 'my tooth has just broken' Actually it wasnt quite said in that mild mannered way - there were a few explitives as you can well imagine. Obviously it was all my fault but thats what being married is all about. So we had to book an emergency appointment at our local dentist. Hence the title of the post ' Mr Moler's Dental Practice' . i am sure that there will be thousands of you readers who fully understand the fear of the Dentist - a lot of it totally irrational and unjustified. Its similar to the fact that a lot of people squirm at the thought of snakes - there slimy - they are not actually but its the impression that so many people have. Now if i was going to put any part of my body in the'capable' hands of an expert for anything i would feel so much more comfortable knowing that they had completed all of the practice on someone else and had finished his training and didnt need any more practice - wouldnt you agree??

Recession ! What Recession ??

Ok - it does sound flippant and gives the impression that it does not effect me - but of course it does. I, like an awful lot of other people, know someone who has been made redundant - in fact I know of 6 since Christmas - one of them is my wife. I myself only work 3 days per week in my 'proper job' and one of my collegues is also going down to 3 days.

We (that is my wife and I) have decided to try get the positive out of this -
My wife has 'dabbled' in a part time business for a few years now - she makes crystal wedding tiaras and jewellery. Now that she will have so much free time (ha ha) we have done some digging and found that our local business link still have funding available for new start up companies. After a lengthy discussion with one of their team where we outlined our grand plan to make an internet one stop wedding shop they have agreed to fund one of their suppliers to help us create an official Business Plan. So we get some good expertise - no charge to us. When this is completed we present this to Business Link and they then decide how to help us move it forward and advise on what , if any, funding is available. This could cover things such as web sites , search engine optimisation and marketting. Nothing in stone yet but a good start.
OK - this is trying to turn a hobby into a business and yes my wife has really good skills for making this kind of thing, but this is just us. There must be lots of things that recently made redundant people can do. For example are you a keen photographer - (have a look at what wedding photographers charge !!!) that could be a good option. Do you make things - can you make enough to go to your local market/craft fair and sell them. Do you paint or write - article writing can be very profitable see here for an idea of where to start - there are tutorials on this site to give help and guidance. A lot of advice about re-starting your career points to trying to utilise what you already know - hence the hobby thing. It doesnt have to be restricted to this , sit down and just bounce ideas around - who knows - one of them might turn out to be a success. I read somewhere recently about the do-ers and those that don't. The don't do-ers are those that will not put a timescale on when they will take the first step to their dreams. So it never happens, and they are never seen to fail - because they have done nothing to fail at. The do-ers, they will set a timescale , think carefully and plan, then do - If they fail, that will be a disappointment - but they tried - and will probabaly bounce back with another idea.
So take the positive out of this situation - if you are reading this I assume you have a roof over your head, utilities in the house , a PC, food and maybe even a glass of wine in your hand - think of those that have absolutly nothing, no roof , no food no hope !. look at what you have and appreciate it and enjoy it

Why - have you seen the date ???? - i had totally forgotten about this blog i have been keeping my new web sites uptodate - thats my excuse and i am sticking to it!!

This year i am trying to change my life style - up to now i have spent almost all of my time - work and so called leisure time - dealing with work and websites (still work).
Now i am trying to leave some leisure time for just that - leisure.

Mid last year we were lucky enough to be allocated an allotement by our local council. It was an absolute mess, couple of old sheds , lots of bricks and sheet metal and so overgrown that the neighbours had tried to cover the grass to stop the weeds spreading into theirs. My wife and I spent the next 4 weekends and several evenings trying to get it into some kind of order and it was getting there. However , the dreaded work pressure took over again and i found i was working lateish (i always start at 7:30 ) and the odd satuday and sunday morning. The garden was pushed to the back of the Q of priorities.
My other leisure pursuit is fishing. 2007 no fishing, 2008 replaced all of the lines and fly's - still no fishing - life needs to change - it has to be 2009.
We live in an area that boasts 3 trout lakes within 10 miles so its is not as if i have to drive for miles and miles !!.

If you asked most people i know what my favorite expression is they would probably reply 'i dont have enough time for that !!' - whatever that is.

So how have i managed almost one month into 2009 - not to well actually - been working extra hours as we have had one of my colleuges leave and, was trying to avaoid the expression but, with the recession he is not being replaced. also trying to consolidate lots of wedding sites i have created for my wife - she has been made reduntant and so she (we) are going to put 100% effort into getting the website(s) found in google and so she can sell more product - then i will be rich - and will have lots of leisure time - mmmmm maybe not quite

the allotment !!!

Oh dear - what have i done. The allotment is a nightmare !!. we started work on knocking down the 2 sheds and thsi has left a huge pile of bricks , glass and steel sheets to clear away. The society cannot fund another skip so its all down to me - another £100+ - i thought gardenning was a cheap hobby. on top of that the plot of land not covered by rubbish gives a good representation of the alps. need a rotavator (another £100+)- its the only way to get this sorted. Having said all of that we have actually dug a small area and have some veg planted in it - probably too late in the year but didnt cost much for the seeds in the first place.
And of course the weather hasnt been too friendly up here - the only real time i have available is saturday and Sunday. it seems we have sunshine while i am in the office and then rains whenever i have free time.
never mind, we are still hoping to have everything ready for next season .

how middle class is that ???

I have now become the proud owner of an allotment - well when i say owner i am renting it from the local council. i enquired about getting one last year and it has only just come through. i was offerred a choice of three, all pretty much in a bad state, but for the prices i am being charged i cant complain.
it is my intention to make it totally organic and recycle whatever i can . for example there are 2 sheds on the site that really do need to come down (surprised they are still standing!!!) however i will be using the wood from them to make a dividing fence. having read about this kind of thing and meeting a couple of the other tenents it seems that there is a great deal of cameradery amongst the group and people are always willing to give advice and surplus seeds/ plants - sounds good to me.

the reason for the blog title ? well i mentioned this to a couple of people and had the same reply "how very middle class" (i am working class) - it seems that it is now the 'trendy' thing to do to have a bit of land and grow your own produce.

i never thought that getting an allotement would shoot me up the class ladder !!

Why is it that the working life is so complicated ????
as i have mentioned before i am working for 2 very good and reputable companies, i am very lucky in that respect, but the job description just seems to expand on a daily basis. for my job with an ibm business partner i am now responsible for / project managing an installation of a new telephone system at a company in bristol. being an ibm business partner it is an internet protocol telephony solution (IPT) this one runs of an ibm server and is a very comprehensive solution allowing options such as hunt groups, redirect of phones, auto divert onto mobiles and even allows voice mail to be added to an email address. the point of me whittering on ??? it is so comprehensive and we are getting more and more customers - i think i should be working for them 5 days per week - not 3.
on the other hand the other company i work for specialises in restoration of Aston Martins - wow i hear to gasp - exactly . it is a great company to work for and seeing some of the fabulous cars each day is a bonus - ok the moan point - there is again so much that could be done there that i should be working there 5 days a week. ok lets do the math 5 days at company 1: 5 days at company 2 : 2 days off a at weekend would be nice - oops - not eneough days in the week

so sad - never even got to the interview stage for that job i was so enthusiastic about. it was one of those that said 'if you dont hear by such and such - hard luck buddy your a loser' well they were not quite the words but you know what i mean.

Charity Begins ----where ?

in december 06 one cold and dark night an unexpected knock on the door (arent all knocks on the door unexpected - probably) -to continue .
a gentleman at the doorstep asked if i could pass on some leaflets to our neighbours - no problem i said and being nosey asked what they were -he explained it was to do with an action group to try & stop new houses being built in our area. i had not heard about this and as the connverstaion progressed i said they should have a web site & thats what i do for a living (meagre as it is) oops- bad move - could you set one up he asked exctedley - of course i can - then the big BUT - we dont have any money of course. Being kind hearted, charitable or just plain stupid i agreed to do this for free. 14 months on i am still involved with this project - i have gently suggested i can give access to the web site to anyone else if they would like to take it over - but the offer has not been taken up. Never mind its for a good cause and i suppose it could have an impact on the campaign.

so charity does begin at home

Too old to work (or change your job!)

At what age do you settle down and just get to the stage of finishing off your working life by just 'gliding' through your current job ?. in my case it seems - Never !.
At the moment i am working for 2 very good companies one for 3 days per week , the other for 2 days per week. Lucky you - you might say , and to a large degree i would agree. However i have just seen a job advertised that just gives you that ' i would love to do that' feeling. - so i have applied for it. It is still IT related but the added bonus is that it is dealing predominatly with Photoshop, maintaining and restoring a photography collection. Now how cool would that be ???
i am sure that there will be lots of others applying but i am confident that my experience will see me through. you can see the examples i have created at www.peterelliott.info/photo.htm. Opinions welcome

Another topic

over the years i have acquired a few domain names - all with the intention of setting up web sites , using adsense etc etc. i have decided to get rid of these now as time just doesnt allow me to do anything with them. i have set up a one page web site for these http://www.astoncentre.co.uk in the hope that the site gets found and someone makes me an offer. Question is do i spend money on an adwords campaign or just let it sit there - alternativly does anyone know of a better method to sell these. look forward to any replies.

Two thoughts for today :-
1. Following on from the topic of 'how to make a million' it seems that one of the thoughts is that you need a 'list'. OK - probably a very good thing but the usual questions arise - how do you generate the list - how do you get people interested enough to want to sign up - do you (or can you) use ebay - do i have a superb offer on (almost) free ebooks and reports - and on and on .......
I would like to hear from anyone who is not a guru (how do i tell they are not a guru ? - not sure - but if they dont want to show me their paypal earnings - probably a good start) and has taken up one of the many offers and used one of them to earn an income.
Look forward to your replies.

2. Ebay - how can i earn a living from ebay. anyone out there have an idea of some good sources where i can find out what is selling, ideas of prices etc etc.

Have you signed up for any of the 'get rich quick schemes' - have any of them worked ?- probably not or you would be sitting in front of your pc reading this.
The initial point to make is that no one forces me to subscribe to the various mailing lists, its just that curiousity factor which sits at the back of your mind and whispers 'do you think that this one might be the one?'. each guru will tell you how easy it is to make money - some do stress that you might have to put some effort into this to get it to work. However as i read more and more of these there is always the missing link for the newbie. For example reading one such sales pitch this morning - we give you everything you need to make this a success, all you need to do is drive traffic to the site. . excellent, but thats why i am reading all of these sales sites - because i need more traffic !!!!!. if i had the traffic to my site i would be busy parcelling up the product and shipping it out to my new found customer.
My wife sells wedding tiaras on ebay and its a steady stream of orders, she also has a web site (view that here), but there are very few sales from the site - why - not enough visitors. we can point the ebay listing to a web site but you have to be careful not to upset ebay - so what do we do - read more articles about how you can use ebay to make a fortune. i am sure that there are people out there making a steady income from ebay and their web site - i would really be interested in knowing how they did it. maybe someone will add a comment to this blog telling me how its done.
i mentioned in a previous blog about getting peoples views on these get rich quick schemes - the offer is still open - waiting for you comments

Well - at least i returned within a shorter time frame this time ;o)
I have a few web sites of my own and , like a lot of other people out there, i would like to get the site found. i tend to concentrate on google - that is always the one that other people talk about. however although google accounts for almost 50% of searches (thats the figure i have but please feel free to correct me ! ) the other biggies such as yahoo and msn are still worth following up.
the point of all of this ? well does anyone out there have a simple 'noddy guide' as to what you have to do to get found in the non google search engines or some hints and tips .
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok , Ok - so i said in my original post and my last post that this would be updated on a regular basis - i have tried - just been too busy!!!!!
This blog is hints and tips for newbies - but i have just been reading about the 'grey surfers' - the market out there is very big for this target audience, however, another important aspect is that we have an awful lot of skills in these people which is not being used. My area of expertise (i like to think so anyway) is in Information Technology (IT) and there are so many skilled people out there who have lost their jobs for whatever reason, and because of their age find it difficult to find jobs. I realise that there is now a discrimination act that says this should not be a barrier but in the real world we all know it happens. the purpose of this rambling ?? , i would like you to contact me or add to this blog if you are one of these people who still want to work but cant get back into the industry. i use IT in this case but this is across the board of manufacturing through to all kinds of services. let me know your thoughts, add to the blog or contact me direct at info@pje-itc.co.uk

web paje - hints and tips for newbies

Apologise - i was going to update this blog on a regular basis - and most of you will realise that it is over a month since the last blog. However there is a good reason for this. moving away from the 'what is a web site' information, for the past few months i have been 'studying' the phenomenon that is ‘ebooks’ !!!!!

For those of you not familiar with the term the wikipedia description is

“An e-book (also: eBook, ebook) is an electronic (or digital) version of a book. The term is used ambiguously both to refer to either an individual work in a digital format, or a hardware device used to read books in digital format. Some users deprecate the second meaning in favor of the more precise "e-book device". However the term interplay works out colloquially in the long run, e-books are an emerging and rapidly changing technology, and since at least 2004 have included newer experimental online magazines, pioneered in part by Baen's Books in their release of the first Grantville Gazette.”

I am constantly asked to subscribe to news letters offering free ebooks on every subject imaginable. OK – I leave my name and email address and then I am added to a ‘list’ for that newsletter and then I will receive losts of special offers, some free and others at a low price.

NB – all of the ones I have subscribed to ALWAYS have a clearly identified unsubscribe option – so no spam is involved [ note to newbies when I say spam, I don’t mean the fabulous tinned variety that is my favourite, but the spam as in sending un-wanted emails.]

Most of these companies / individuals are always stressing the importance of building a list of potential customers and then keep them happy with free offers in the hope that they will eventually make a purchase. There is also a similar market out there for ‘affiliate marketing’ and ‘adsense sites’.

Now each of these options will make me anywhere from a ‘decent monthly income’ to absolute fortune $ with lots of zeros.

A thought - Would it be useful to you if there was a site / forum where people who have been through a similar experience could post their comments. Hopefully most of them would be positive so we can all make a decent income. There might be people who have tried and failed for whatever reason. If they were willing to share these experiences, again we would all benefit.

I am not trying to ‘catch out’ any rogues in this game – no one forces us to make a purchase. I have found that most of the ones that I have been dealing with all seem genuine – I just thought that as ‘information is king’ then sharing your information with others is a good thing. Before we start I would like to recommend some sources of information which I find invaluable. The first is that marvellous on line encyclopedia – wikipedia and the second is a site with tutorials on all aspects of creating a web site called W3c schools. Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

What is a website ? – it is a collection of ‘pages’ written in a language that allows it to be viewed by most people with a PC and Internet access.

The various pages typically will contain hyperlink’s to other pages within the web site or to other websites.
Websites can be created for information purposes for individuals or businesses or they can be e-Commerce, allowing them to sell products via the internet to customers like you and I.
[Note - Although the Internet is now much more secure in terms of trading, caution must still be used if emails are requesting personal or banking details. ]You can now buy just about anything or get information on any subject by using the Internet.

What are Search Engines ? - “The number 1 way people find out about websites”.
Research consistently shows that over 85% of people find new web sites by using search engines. Other surveys show that, after email, search engines are the most popular activity on the web.
After you have created your web site you then need people to find it. That is why people use search engines such as Google & Yahoo. If your web site sold Widgets and people were using Google to look for Widgets then all sites selling Widgets would be shown to the potential customer.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) ? - This is a dark art performed by SEO experts. Using the current thinking from the search engines the web site will be structured in such a way such that the Spiders (see next para) can find the appropriate content and (hopefully) get your page found within the search engines.

What are Spiders ? – a spider is also know as a crawler or a robot. This is a program/software devised by the various search engines to spider or crawl thru your site to determine where you will be found in the listings pages. They check for items such as keyword (next week) relevance, appropriate content of your site, links to other web sites and also links back from other web sites. As previously mentioned this is where the SEO expert comes in because they will set the site up in such a way as to ‘please’ these spiders.

OK - you have found this blog - so what's it all about ??? it is my intention to post regular hints and tips for people new to the internet, web sites, ebay and all things web related.
Why? - well i am preparing several ebooks on the subject and also posting articles on my other web sites (start with www.web-paje.co.uk) so this will be useful for getting your feedback. If its good - excellent - if not - i will treat all feedback in a positive way and use it to adjust my articles. What makes me so qualified? - Good question - the answer is i have over 40 years experience within the IT industry, the internet was not even heard of when i started in the industry. I am a skilled software developer and over the last few years i have devoted my working life (and a lot of my personal life) to developing web sites.
What happens next ? Over the next week i will start adding the articles, please read them and let me know your thoughts.
